Bust Card Stats

Most people focus on their cards when they’re playing blackjack and poker. They try to get as close as they can to 21 without taking a second glance at what the dealer is holding. It’s funny, because more often than not, you can win with a 12 or 13 by letting the dealer bust.

You can listen to me all day (in fact, I’d recommend it), but some people just need to see some proof. Well, for all you doubting folk, here are some bust hand statistics to give you nerds a quantifiable edge over the house.

Unlike poker, if the dealer is showing a 5 or 6, you’re looking pretty good. He’s got about a 45 percent chance of busting, so you need to make absolutely sure that you do not bust when you’ve got a hard 12 or higher.

If the dealer’s showing a 4, you’re still in a good place. There about a 40 percent chance of busting, so if there’s any risk of your hand busting, just sit on it and pray that the dealer pulls a high card.

If the dealer shows a 2 or a 3, it’s looking a little uglier, like losing on the river in poker. There are fewer cards that will bust the dealer on the first draw, and in these situations, it’s usually a pretty good idea to hit if you’ve got a hard 12 or 13.
