Rod Carion: Computer World’s Hot Rod

After sketching their plan on a placemat in a restaurant called House of Pies in Houston, Texas, three people pooled in $1000 each to form a company that would later become a corporate giant. Rod Canion, Jim Harris, and Bill Murto, who all worked for Texas Instruments as senior managers, formed Compaq Computer Corporation in 1982. Of the three, Canion served as the company’s CEO.

Born on January 19, 1945 as Joseph R. Canion, Canion earned his Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering in 1968 from the University of Houston. Aside from the $3000 they gathered, they were able to garner $1.5 million of venture capital from Ben Rosen and Sevin-Rosen Partners.

When Compaq was still starting, International Business Machines Corporation (IBM) was the world’s leading computer company. Canion’s business strategy to match IBM’s prominence was to produce IBM clones - computers that looked and operated like IBM models, but less expensive. Compaq’s market tactic was not original though, as many other budding computer ventures also manufactured IBM clones. What proved to be the pivotal point in the company’s history though, was Canion’s decision to hire former IBM employees, giving Compaq a significant edge over its competition.

It was also during Canion’s term that Compaq successfully marketed the laptop, while other computer corporations failed. Compaq’s laptop models, the Compaq Portable and the Compaq Plus, would set the standard of portable, fully functional personal computers.

In its first year of business, with Canion at the helm, Compaq earned the largest revenue for a starting company in U.S. history - a colossal $111.2 million. Compaq also reached the $1 billion mark faster than any corporation in the U.S.

The Toddler’s Guide To Perseverance

My two year old daughter asks me for ice cream about one hundred times a day. You think I’m exaggerating for effect, but I am really not. She starts when she first gets up in the morning, requesting it as her breakfast. (I say no). She asks mid-morning, several times. She asks for it as an appetizer to her lunch, asks for it when my mother is caring for her (I’m blissfully not privy to that, as I am in the world of grown-ups, coaching!), asks at snack, dinner, and about 70 other times during the day.
Sometimes she employs tactics of terror, kicking and screaming until our very nerves tremble. Sometimes she flashes the sweetest smile.

And of the hundred times she asks per day (I made it a nice round number, but I suspect it’s probably higher than that) she gets ice cream maybe once every two or three days. Sometimes she wears me down once a day for a few days. Now, before you start thinking this is an article on parenting techniques (as in, what NOT to do ), I’m actually using this headstrong toddler as an example. An example of what TO do. Yes, an example for even you to follow.

Because what is her success rate? On a good day, it is one percent. ONE PERCENT. She FAILS 99 percent of the time. She tries a variety of approaches, and finds that 99 times out of 100, they do not work. And yet, she gets a bit of what she wants just about every day.

Why? Let’s examine. First, she makes it very clear what she wants. She tells me color, flavor, in detail, in her request. She starts early in the morning and doesn’t let up until nighttime. She actually hits up her father more than she does me, knowing he’s more of a softy, so she knows the proper venue for her request.

Lesson to be learned: Be REALLY clear on what you want. It’s hard to expect the world to give you what you’re looking for if you don’t quite know what it is. Define the color and flavor of what you want.

Second, failure is not any kind of deterrent for her. She is the embodiment of the old adage, “‘No’ just means try again later.” She puts no negative spin to herself for the 99 times she fails to get what she wants. She doesn’t say to herself, “Oh, I’ve failed. Maybe I’m not meant to have ice cream. Maybe I should just learn to like this broccoli stuff. Why -oh why- do I never get what I want?” She just asks time number 83. And 84. And 85……

Lesson: Failure simply means TRY AGAIN. It does not mean anything about you, that you are not worthy or not special or not meant to have what you want. You just have to keep trying.

Third, she learns from her mistakes. I notice she’s refined her request time to times when she considers me most vulnerable. She gets me when I’m tired or otherwise occupied, or when there is someone else around and I’m not as likely to stand firm.

Lesson: Learn from your failures. You’ll eventually be able to cut them down if you learn what NOT to do.

Fourth, she’s flexible. At times when she sees I’m steadfast in my refusal to provide her drug of choice (ice cream, before you go off to summon the proper authorities), she starts to negotiate for an alternative. Lollipop? Gum? Chocolate? Raisin? She usually gets me with the raisin.

Lesson: Be flexible! Maybe you can’t get EXACTLY what you want, but you can get an approximation. Ask for raisins!

Fifth, she eats like a pro. She eats broccoli, seafood, any crazy healthfood I decide to feed her. It makes me more likely to give her ice cream when I see she’s “paid her dues” and eaten all the good stuff I want her to.

Lesson: Pay your dues. Life rewards the hardworking and the diligent. Eat your broccoli and you’re more likely to get the ice cream.

Lastly, she loses with a big smile. Sometimes it turns into a joke and we laugh. So even when I “win” (and I don’t really suspect I ever truly do), we stay friends and go on to negotiate another day.

Lesson: Take life’s bumps with a smile. You never know when life is just two requests away from giving you a great big ice cream cone.

Well, there you have, the toddler’s philosophy to perseverance. Before you laugh and dismiss this as the ramblings of a proud mom (guilty as charged!), take a moment to reflect on how much more successful we would all be if we faced life’s challenges with the aplomb of little children. Sure, they drop on the floor and wail when they don’t get their way (and just imagine how cathartic THAT would be if you could do that at your next meeting!) but they get right back up and try again, unafraid and unstoppable. A pretty good way to approach life, wouldn’t you say?

Five Ways to Break In Party Shoes

1. Wear them around the house for at least 2 days, with a pair of thick white cotton athletic socks, using either sandpaper or a sidewalk to slightly scuff the bottom.

2. If they’re leather, waterproof the outside of the shoes, then soak the entire pair underwater for about 2 minutes. Wearing a pair of thick white socks, walk around your house until dry. The shoe will mold to your foot. Caution: Don’t try this with an expensive pair, or light-colored shoes.

3. Purchase a pair of Dr. Scholl’s Heel liners, available at you local drugstore, and place them on the inside heel of the shoe. The liners help not only to break in the shoe, but also to keep your heels from slipping and rubbing.

4. If the shoe is particularly tight or stiff, grab it by the heel and gently knead it back and forth to loosen the sole, being very careful not to break the sole.

5. If all else fails, purchase a shoe stretcher, a device similar to a shoe tree that helps stretch tight shoes. This device can be purchased from your local shoe repair shop or shoe store.

How to overcome negetivitiy in your life?

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.A strong positive mental attitude will create more miracles than any wonder drug.Human beings, by changing the inner attitudes of their minds, can change the outer aspects of their lives.I know I’m not going to get that job. I need to lose weight, but I can’t. Everyone keeps telling me walking and exercise will help me to lose it, but I know it won’t work for me. Nothing works for me. I’m overdrawn on my checking account and I have no way of getting any money to put back in there.

All of these things you say you can’t do or won’t happen for you will not happen with that attitude. Thinking negatively will keep you from getting the things you want or being where you want to be in life. The only person who can remove all that negativity out of your life is you.
How do you remove negativity from your life? The most important thing you can do to remove negativity from your life is to have a positive train of thought about every situation. What you think is what will happen. Thinking you can’t accomplish anything will keep you from doing that. Having negativity in your life is a major downfall. You can’t accomplish anything without having positive thoughts. Anything you want from a new job, losing weight or gaining financial stability require you to think positive thoughts to succeed. Negative thoughts will develop into negative actions. That’s when you physically won’t go after the things you want because your thoughts will keep you from doing something to get it. Since you think you can’t do it or have something anyway, you won’t go after it and you will never get what you want.

We usually have negativity in our life from low self-esteem and lack of confidence. This is when we don’t believe in ourselves and feel we don’t deserve things. The first thing you have to do is build your self-esteem back up to believe in yourself. Believe that you can accomplish anything in your life and you have the reliance to go after it to get it. This will help you loose a lot of negative thoughts right there. You have to remove all negative thoughts and actions from your life.

Think positively about everything you want to do and it will come to you. Develop the attitude you can get anything you set out to have and once you decide this, nothing can stop you from accomplishing that. With keeping your thought train like this you are removing all the negativity from your life. Surround yourself with positive people in your life. If you are around negative people you can’t help but to be negative, too. There is no one to encourage you to have positive thoughts if everyone you are around is negative like you. Birds of a feather flock together. Remove yourself from negative people.

It takes time to develop and keep a positive train of thought. Once you decide that you don’t want negativity in your life anymore and disconnect yourself from the people who have nothing but negative thoughts, you can accomplish being a positive person. Whenever something happens in your life don’t automatically think negatively about the situation, no matter what it is. Practice to think only positive thoughts and eventually this will become a part of you. Once you have no more negativity in your life, you will have the tremendous life you want and deserve

My Career As A Hermit

“Work from home. Make big bucks in your pajamas.” - typical work-from-home ad.

Quick. What do writers, stay-at-home parents and online marketing geeks have in common? I mean, besides insanity? They are all hermits.

The typical writer locks himself up for years brooding in a dark room, surfacing only long enough to find out who this year’s American Idol is. This solitary brooding is supposed to help him develop a keen sense of the human condition.

Stay-at-home parents are prisoners in their own castles, as each child has a different toilet schedule. And a different nap schedule. And a different tantrum schedule. By the time they are all buttoned up in their snowsuits and hopefully not needing the bathroom in the next fifteen minutes, the stores are all closed.

Online marketing geeks sit down to their computer screens in the morning. When they look up, they wonder how it got so dark. The next time they look up, they wonder how it got so light again.

What a sad bunch. What a sorry lot. Who would take on such careers?

I would.

I’m a writer. I’m a Stay-at-home Dad. I’m an online marketing geek. I’m … Super Hermit!

“Get dressed.”

“Why? Don’t you like my pajamas anymore?”

“You have to go out.”

“What?! Why would I do something so radical?”

“It’s Tuesday. You have a big outing.”

“Tuesday? Tuesday? What’s Tuesday?”

“Garbage day.”

In the country, three minutes to the road and back with the bags, then again with the recycling, qualifies as a big outing for a professional hermit. In fact, that’s more time than most couples spend each week being a couple.

If this sounds like just the kind of self-inflicted bliss you’ve been itching for, there are a few things you should know before making the big career switch.

A dedicated hermit often skips a shower. Sometimes, the hermit gets away with it. To help the hermit remember when shower day arrives, there is a simple four-part clinical procedure: Lift arm. Insert nose. If you faint, it’s time to shower (when you regain consciousness). If you don’t faint, schedule a shower — as early as next week, if you have an opening.

Personally, I apply a simple rule of thumb. As long as I spend more time showering each week than I spend taking out the garbage, my wife probably won’t divorce me. Unless I forget to take out the garbage…again.

Here are a few more tips for shower-challenged hermits everywhere: Wear cologne. Lots of it. Your partner will think you did it just for her. Or him. Or it. If you wear enough, the kids might even let you out. Wear many layers of thick clothes. Warning, if you live in Edmonton or Moscow this might force you to open all the windows to keep from smelling even worse. If you live in Dallas or Delhi, it might force you to close all your windows to keep from smelling even worse. Eat garlic for breakfast. If that doesn’t work, eat garlic for lunch, too. And for dinner. And for dessert. Nobody will notice your shower schedule, and the kids will definitely let you out.

We professional hermits also lose touch with our friends.

“Hey David. How have you been? It’s Al.”

“Al? Al who?”

“It’s Al. Your friend.”

“I have a friend?”

If working in your pajamas appeals to you, perhaps to avoid being the next victim of the “What Not to Wear at Work” TV crew, a career as a professional hermit is your ideal gig. Pick up a pen and paper, get yourself a second-hand computer, or borrow some kids.

If you barricade yourself in your house long enough, you can enjoy your very own life of abnormal isolation and solitude. And everyone will know just what to buy you for Christmas - pajamas.

How To Master The Art of Conversation

The art of conversation is a skill shared by most successful people. Good conversation promotes an image of self-confidence, intelligence, and wittiness.

People who always seem to rise to the top of their professions and are well respected by others who share the ability to converse with anybody in every situation.

People who seem to speak effortlessly and efficiently with others are generally well liked and highly successful.

If you need to improve your conversational skills, here are a few tips that can help you enhance your conversational skills and boost your image.

1. Always say what you think, not what you think others want you to say. Especially in a professional setting, learning to express your views and ideas in a positive, non-threatening manner will invite reactions and responses.

Effective leaders always say what they are thinking and express their ideas freely. Having the courage to speak your mind as well as listening openly to the views and ideas of others is a sure way to earn the respect and admiration of all those you encounter.

2. Listen carefully to what others are saying. People often interpret things said by others in a way that clouds their ability to hear what people are intending to say.

By giving your full attention to the speaker, you can hear what they intend for you to hear instead of what you want to hear.

The art of conversation includes the ability to listen to others as well as the ability to speak effectively.

3. Always assume that a speaker is saying exactly what they mean to say. Even if it seems unclear, try to find meaning and coherence to the words they are saying and give them the respect of hearing what they want you to hear.

In any conversation, the ability to give respect is just as important as receiving it. The art of conversation is a give and take between parties, not one speaker and one listener.

4. Any conversation can be broken down into three parts.

The first part is small talk. Small talk is dictated by social rules and includes polite greetings, inquiries about the well-being of others, etc.

Stage two is the end of the small talk and moving on to the purpose of the conversation such as business, the sharing of opinions and personal views.

Without the ability to express yourself efficiently, the conversation can easily slip back into small talk, lessening the chances of accomplishing the initial goal of the conversation.

The third part of a conversation is where the various ideas and views expressed can be merged into a satisfying end for all parties involved in the conversation.

The art of conversation is a learned skill that is common among successful, energetic people. If you are unable to effectively express yourself in any situation, you will likely find that you do not attract the attention and command the respect that is bestowed upon some others.

People who talk freely and easily with others usually find more professional and personal fulfillment than those who are introverted and silent.

If you want to improve your professional and social standing, learn to communicate efficiently and in a positive manner.

You will notice a dramatic difference in the way other people perceive you if you demonstrate self-confidence and project a friendly, informed image.

6 ways to destroy a beautiful complexion

Women (and men. too) spend billions of dollars trying to make their complexions look great. Sometimes their efforts are self-defeating. Some of the following problems you have heard of before but I bet you haven’t heard of all of this.

Sun damage

Harmful UV rays can cause scarring of the elastic tissues in your skin. These elastic tissues make skin soft and easy to move. A condition called solar keratosis develops from long term exposure to UV rays. This will cause the skin to lose its flexibility and will make a 30 year old woman look
59. Plus skin cancer can ruin your entire day. Use sunscreen.

Also, many women, after years of sun exposure develop a condition called, Fungal Solar Keratosis. The sun
damage cracks the skin, allowing fungal parasites under the skin. These parasites will interfere with normal healing even if therapeutic skin creams are used. Special fungal
skin creams are the only solution.

GrandPa@GrandPaGraham.com

Bad make up

Many manufacturers put chemicals in their products to make them last longer. It costs money to remove spoiled lipstick et al from the shelves of grocery stores and pharmacies. So they put things like phenol and formaldehyde in all their
skin care products. Germs can’t live with these poisons around. But these products are very caustic. They burn skin and can cause cancer.

Use only skin products without these poisons. Check the labels.

Dryness

If you live in a dry or salty environment, the dry air will suck moisture out of your skin. This causes the skin cells to shrivel up and makes puckering lines develop. Women in
moist environments like Great Britain are noted for their youthful complexions.

Good chemical free moisturizers will help. Also moving to a lake will help.

Bad diet

Skin needs proper nutrition in order to replace dead skin cells with new softer, healthier cells. Of course, you entire body needs proper nutrition. But the skin shows the signs of improper diet long before the liver does. When did you ever see an unhealthy, ugly liver anyway? You’ve seen a lot of ugly skin.

Look up the food pyramid put out by the US government. Stick with this and you will generally be ok.

Air toxins

Household cleansers contain some of the deadliest materials known to humankind. Yet we cover our bodies with them when we clean our homes and offices. Many contain bleach which will destroy our skin and make us look like mummies. It’s also bad for the lungs and kills sperm development in
small boys.

Also chemicals in the air from household mold will cause the skin cells to toughen up and get scaly. The molds live in the walls and under sinks and send these chemicals into
the air of your home.

Illness

Of course, being sick makes you look terrible.

You don’t need a dermatologist for most of these probems. Just common sense and a little time checking ingredient lists.

Team Work in the Kitchen

Restaurants are packed with hungry eaters because going out to dinner is fun. It is fun for many reasons, but mainly because you don’t have to cook and you get time to socialize with whoever you went out with.

In any restaurant kitchen there is an order to the way things are made, each and every part of preparing a meal is in a sequence and it divided up between people. Typically there is someone who makes all of the salads and desserts, basically the cold food preparation. Then there is the person who sautés and works the deep fryer. And then finally there is the person who runs the grill and the ovens. The person who runs the grill and the ovens is usually the head chef and is responsible for the complete and entire outcome of everything that is created in the kitchen.

If you have ever been in a busy kitchen on a Friday night and watch all of the cooks working as each ticket is printed, you know how crazy it can get. One meal after the other is put on the counter in a certain order and made to perfection. The servers come in and pick them up and deliver them to the tables. There are so many moving parts to this, it is almost like there should be a professional orchestra director managing the whole thing.

It is a lot of work being a cook, not only preparing the food, but more importantly is cooking it to perfections. If you are a cook you might end up snacking on the food quite a bit, and if you do, you could take the Acceletrim weight loss product to help you be less hungry, especially if you are working the desert section.

A Perfect World-A Perfect Life

The Holiday Season - with all its wonderful colors, decorations, and foods that you just can’t resist.
What if the Holidays could be kept all year round? Would it be an ideal situation or would everyone of us tire of it, grow to loathe the “sameness” and wish for different situations
to come around?
Whether it be the Holiday Season or the
everyday “nose to the grindstone” type of existence, there is a whole lot of wisdom going on here.
Everyone needs a little bit of stability and monotony to know that the world is still going around and that
winter follows fall, etc. When the tasks, schedules, and other daily to-do items begin to wear you down - not because of their physical or mental
strains, but by the emotional pull to see, do and experience something special, what can you do to overcome this restlessness and uneasiness? Sure,
taking care of family, or friends, doing a day’s work for a day’s pay and sometimes maybe a little bit more either way, you are satisfied with
your life, but there - right there in the corner of your mind - that imp of “I need something exciting, different, and …”
Your whole body wants to reach for the stars, but your daily schedule keeps your feet planted firmly on the ground.
The “whole ball of twine” is yours. The day begins the same, but you can change it to quench some of that thirst of experiencing the “unique, and special.”
Sure, if you can afford a year-long vacation around the world, purchase a home in every country you just dream about, and socialize and change little
tidbits of social chit-chat with the “rich and famous”, then, my friend, your problem is pretty much solved.
But, for the rest of us, tomorrow will very closely resemble today, and yesterday was a carbon copy of the day before. Change it - that’s right - take the “bull by the horns” and change it. Do your assigned work or expected chores in a different way - try it!
Move your furniture around, put up new posters or pictures, take a class, take a walk, pick up some agates, or skip a few pebbles across a lake. Do
something different, try something new, and begin satisfying that need for adventure.
If you think that money or lack of will deter yourplans, then right there lies another challenge - find those wonderful, exuberant “free for the asking” type of activities that you never tried before.
Libraries, book stores, farmer’s markets, nature centers, forest preserves, zoos, etc. They are there -
some free, some for a very nominal charge, or just sit down at a sidewalk cafe and watch “people”.
This, in itself, is quite an experience and education.
How many people look up to see the sun, or are they so preoccupied that the “sky could be falling” and they would be totally unaware.
Those wildflowers or daisies on the side of the road are a treasure in any arrangement - just the touch your table might need. Find something as little as a bird’s feather and turn it “into something.” Stretch your imagination muscles with the small items and soon you will be soaring with the eagles on ventures you never taught possible.
This, in itself, is no “pie in the sky” but it sure beats the daily doldrums of “sameness.” Keep a journal of your “discoveries” and you will be amazed a year from now, or even just a few weeks from today how different your writing will be. At first, it will
probably be very basic, but then when you use your senses to discover everything around you, you will notice descriptive terms and an unfolding
joy. Life is short - make the most of it - and
ENJOY!
Where there is life - there lies the possibilities of a miracle -
**
Savor those “quiet moments” during the Holiday Season - use them to rejuvenate, relate, and unwind. They may be few and far between, but
they are a true blessing in disguise!
**
Your senses are the keys to unlimited knowledge and vast experiences - open the locks of your mind, heart, and soul - let your whole being shine
in the brightness of discovery - whether great or small!
**
A window in your home is not just a pane of glass within a frame - it is the entrance to the world!
**
Your hands can touch a heart, wipe away a tear, and build the universe. Never take them for granted and use them wisely!
********************************
ENJOY!
