Martial Arts Strength Training

According to various sources on the internet, a 1996 article in Iron Man Magazine revealed Bruce Lee’s workout. In addition to his cardio and karate workouts, Lee lifted weights three times a week and performed the following routine:

clean and presses 2 x 8
squats            2 x 12
barbell pullovers 2 x 8
bench presses     2 x 6
good mornings     2 x 8
barbell curls     2 x 8

Unfortunately, he injured his back doing good mornings, which nearly ruined his career. Otherwise, his weight training was successful in that it is credited with helping him add 30 pounds of solid muscle to his relatively small frame.

Although Lee is the most famous martial artist ever, it may be that the strongest was a man named Masutatsu Oyama. Therefore, it will be interesting to contrast Lee’s workout with Oyama’s.

The Karate Bull-Fighter

Oyama was one of the first to bring Karate to America and founder of the Kyokushin style of Karate. His 1958 classic “What is Karate?” was one of the first books on the subject written in English, and designed to make the subject accessible to westerners.

Oyama initially became famous with stunts such as bull-fighting Karate-style. Unlike Mexican bull-fighters, he would actually wrestle the bull to the ground and break off one of its horns. (He wasn’t too popular with animal rights activists in Tokyo.)

Oyama’s Strength Training

According to Oyama’s 1958 book, strength and speed are more important than skill for Karate, and speed more important than strength. Also, he said it was very important to practice jumping.

Here are some recommendations he gives in “What is Karate?” (He doesn’t give an exact workout.)

Running - 4km per day
Rope-skipping - 20 minutes per day
Dumbell arm exercise (shoulder press?) - 200 times
Dips - 100 times
Push ups (with hands in fist) - 300 times
Inclined push ups - 100 times
Jumping side kick over 4 foot vaulting horse
Inclined dumbell bench press

Exercises requiring a partner:
Hitting bag with upper elbow and side of elbow - 200 times each
Practicing jumping kick with bag
Exercises for neck (with partner)
Leg exercise (squat with partner on back)
Back and Abdomen exercises with partner

Elsewhere in the book, Oyama said that he would bench press 175 pounds 500 times a day.

Then there are karate-specific exercises such as straw striking and exercises that are specific to board and stone breaking abilities. All this was in addition to practicing forms, sparring, etc.

Comparing Lee and Oyama

Now, what strikes me as the essential difference between Lee’s and Oyama’s workout styles is volume. Lee’s weight training routine is relatively brief, and he avoided lifting on days of heavy martial arts training.

While Lee might do an exercise for 2 sets of 8 reps (which is fairly typical), Oyama would do it for hundreds of reps. Clearly, Oyama’s is a more time-consuming approach that would require a lot of dedication.

If you look at pictures of these men, they have quite different builds. For Lee, his training goal was apparently to add bulk. Before the weight training, he weighed only 135 pounds, and he added 30 pounds of solid muscle.

Oyama, on the other hand, was obviously a stockier fellow, and talks in his book about losing weight during periods of intense training. Judging from pictures of him with other people, I would say that he was probably slightly taller than Lee (who was 5′ 8″). Although Oyama was of average height, he doesn’t look like a small guy when standing next to American professional wrestlers, boxers, and strongmen.

Possible Conclusions

The point is not to compare them as saying one was better than the other. I do wonder what affect their training style had on the way they looked and how much was just genetic.

At any rate, if Oyama struggled to keep his weight down, it sounds like high volume training helped him to achieve that. Lee, on the other hand, seems to have been naturally lean and wanted the weight training to bulk up (probably to look better on camera). Too much volume (without steroids anyway) might be counter-productive to that goal.

So, maybe the lesson in this is that if you want to lose weight while simultaneously getting stronger, it might be worth considering an old-fashioned high volume workout routine, assuming you can make that kind of dedication. On the other hand, if your goal is to look like Bruce Lee… well, all I can say is “good luck”!

Iron Palm, Is The Secret Out?

When I talk to people about Iron Palm, they think that it’s just about breaking bricks. They even ask, “Why do you want to learn how to break bricks?”. Well, it’s not about breaking bricks. What it is about is cultivating and controlling your Chi, your internal energy.

I look at Chi and where it is stored like money and a bank account, a Chi account, if you will. Deposits have to be made, savings for our “golden years”. The more you know about cultivating it, and “depositing it into your account”, the more internal energy you’ll have when you need it the most.

Once we have an account built up, we have to be able to manage our account. We have to be able to move the energy where we want to, when we want to. That is the Mind-Body connection, to transmit energy where we command it to go.

This is Iron Palm training, this is what we’re after. The breaking of the bricks is strictly a training aid. It’s a measuring devise. It is also a way of losing Chi. You lose Chi from fighting, breaking bricks, and through sex. That’s why Semen Retention, is so vital. That’s why it is so important to makes deposits into your “Chi Account”, and not
withdrawls.

This is a problem that happens with most Iron Palm people.
They stop training because their capabilities become greater.

They think that they have the “heavy hand” and that they have some good techniques, so they slow down in their learning, in their training, and depend on their hand.

This has been a grave error that many a skillful martial artist have made. Fundamentals, the basics are always going to be necessary.

Grand Master Tung Sheng Chang, never trained his hand in Iron Palm. He trained his elbows. When I learned this, I began training my elbows as well. I did keep up with my palm training though.

This was the reason that he didn’t train his hand. He didn’t want to become dependent on this unique special training. He saw many men die from their dependency.

Think about it, the year is 1930, you master this special program, then several years afterward you begin slowing down in your training. Then you receive a challenge, you take the challenge. You feel as though your abilities will see you through. But once the fighting begins, you see the “rust” that has built up on you. You want so badly to land that one blow. The one that will end it, the one that will get you home tonight.

You can see the rest of the story. GM Chang, saw it too many times. How much knowledge went to the graves with these masters?

Most of the Iron Palm courses that are out there start the student off with the striking of a bag filled with mung beans. Then, they move up to the bag that is filled with gravel, all the while using the herbal medicine known as Dit Da Jow.

Dit Da Jow, is a simple formula we call bruise medicine. This formula will get rid of bruises, aches and pains, and so forth.
And, it might be a good formula for striking beans and gravel, but, for striking a canvas bag, that is filled with iron shot (about the same size as BB’s) this bruise medicine will not do.

One of the Herbalist that I use for our Iron Palm formula, told me that he and some of his students, put a little of my medicine on their hands, he then told me that their hands were tingeling. This man is an Herbalist, and he said that he had never felt this before.

This is Iron Palm medicine. This is what it does. It pulls your energy, your Chi, to the part of the body that it’s applied to.

There are many different types of formulas, many of them containing between 9 and 16 different herbs in them. I have seen a couple of formulas that have as many as 30 herbs in them. The formula that has been passed down to me has 39 different herbs in it! It is by far the best that I have ever used. It isn’t by any stretch of anyone’s imagination, a Dit Da Jow. It is an Iron Palm medicine.

Nuts & Bolts of Self Defense

Fundamental “Nuts & Bolts” training for close combat should be directed at dealing with the extremes. That is a life and death struggle for survival, i.e. worst case scenario. Restraint, control, and use of force scenarios and methods are peripheral to this core training. In other words train to deal with these beliefs at the forefront: The enemy is quite willing and capable of killing you - there are multiple threats - they are armed - the assailant(s) are bigger, stronger, faster than you and they CAN FIGHT! Can it get any worse that that? Now add this to the mix: You are physically/mentally exhausted - ill or injured - caught by absolute surprise - may have to protect others as well - no viable avenue of E&E.

So what do we HAVE to do? I think we would all agree that immediate and absolute “threat” elimination by the most extreme (hence most reliable) measures possible is really the only pragmatic answer. So now what?

Let’s look to real world models for some possible answers. Three potential goals seem obvious:

1 - Immediate cessation of life. Yes, killing the SOB’s outright!

2 - Unconsciousness. Knocking the SOB’s out cold!

3 - Acute traumatic shock (least viable). Making it physically impossible for the SOB’s to do ANYTHING.

I would heartily suggest following up with 1 or 2. John Minnery had a good line, “If you killed him once and you’re sure he’s dead, kill him again and be dead sure”. If anyone regards this as melodramatic or overly harsh; well consider what you would do if some animal were about to harm your wife, children, etc.

Look at it this way. Most of us have dogs. You wouldn’t think of hurting or harming that animal. Now you’re walking through the woods and you come across a rabid dog, foaming at the mouth, and it closing in on you and your family. Ask your self, would you think twice about killing that dog where it stands? Of course not! What’s the difference between that dog and the one at home? Your dog at home behaves in a way that deserves your love and respect. The rabid dog behaves in a way that doesn’t. Enough said.

Considering the worst case, it seems only logical that we attack the most viable targets with ruthless, abject brutality. Priority #1 - the throat/neck region and the face/skull (brain box). Everything else is secondary. Why? These two areas assure the “biggest bang for the buck” so to speak. Reality sucks, so you may very well have only ONE CHANCE, you had better make it the best chance possible! This applies to unarmed as well as armed combat.

Attack the throat with the INTENTION of crushing it! No brainer.

Attack the anterior/lateral carotid triangle. One of TWO primary KO points.

Kyusho/Dim Mak this AIN’T! Just “hammer” the bastard. Fast, hard and often is the key phrase!

Attack the cervical spine/C-1 - dens bone attachment.

Attack the head/brain case. Now here we get interesting. The goal in attacking the head should be, in my opinion, to cause ACUTE TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY. Other possible injuries are secondary. Attack with the intention of causing massive “coup contra coup” brain trauma, either through translational or rotational impact. Cause severe “kinking” of the brain stem, either by hyper flexion or extension. Forget the “death touch” stuff. THIS IS HOW people in the real world get F***ed up.

Just research contact sports injuries, i.e. football, hockey, soccer, boxing and judo. Shocking the medulla and the raephi ganglia are proven “shut downs” in the real world. Second proven KO is located at the jawline lateral to the chin at about the spot where the mental foramen is located(draw a vertical line down from corner of mouth). This is the classic boxing KO and is due in large part to rotational acceleration causing “brain bounce” or concussive referal shock and acute twisting of the cervical vertabrae.

No one is saying that this is “easy”, BUT it is what you are going to HAVE to do. Sometimes you CAN attack directly, sometimes you can’t. Uncle Murphy rules the roost here. So you DO whatever you have to DO, but get there! Spit in his eyes, slam a kick(with real intent and hopefully solid boots) into his shins, crush his nuts with a knee, grab the bastard and bite his nose off…….whatever! Shock him, rock him, and knock him out! Or just smile simpering and waste the skel with total abject ruthlessness. Then go home and get a good night’s sleep.

It ain’t pretty, it ain’t easy, it ain’t fun, this is SERIOUS “guano” and your very life and well-being will be hanging in the balance. Either stand up, accept it and deal with it, or fold your hand, the choice is yours. The morgue is filled with compromise. Survival is its OWN REWARD!

EMC! Good morning, and thank you for taking the time to speak with us.

Dr.StanHarris: The pleasure is mine.

EMC!: Could you tell us more about your background?

Dr. Stan Harris: I have two brothers, and two half brothers. We were raised in a single parent home in the roach and mice infested projects (Smith Holmes) of Harrisburg, PA. I remember waking up with giant water bugs crawling on my face! At 6 years of age while playing on a playground, a gang of teenagers jumped, beat, tarred, and feathered me. They left me in a field. Someone found me, and rushed me to the hospital before I suffocated from the thick tar. I grew up wondering if anyone cared, I never heard the words, ” I Love You.” I was neglected, confused, and abused — verbally, emotionally, sexually, and physically. I was beaten with a steel folding chair across my back and head, as well as with a choker chain (for a dog), by the hands of my Mom’s boyfriend — without her knowledge of course.

EMC!: You are a survivor. How did you become interested in Karate, and Martial Arts in general?

Dr. Stan Harris: One day my mother won a free month of Karate Lessons (ShotoKan Karate). She liked it so much that she continued training for quite awhile. One day she got into a fight with her boyfriend that had physically abused me. She knocked him out with a side thrust kick to the jaw. My brothers and I looked at each other in shock. We went to the man on the ground who was out cold and said, “Whatever you do, don’t mess with my Momma anymore, because my Momma is bad, man; my Momma is bad.” The event so impressed me that I started training in Isshin’ryu Karate with the hopes that I would learn to protect myself and one day become a champion and get the attention I so craved for as a younger child.

EMC!: Would you say the realization that you could empower yourself utilizing the principles of Martial Arts, ignited your desire to help others empower themselves in their daily lives?

Dr. Stan Harris: Yes. They (the instructors) taught us to have self discipline, before learning self defense. We learned that the greatest of all victories is the conquest of one’s own self. I wanted to share with others my newly found power of channeling my anger and frustration into something productive. I also wanted others to experience the new found improved self image that comes with self control and accomplishments.

EMC!: Dr. Stan, what are the visions you concoct in your mind which drive your desire to contribute?

Dr. Stan Harris: I see myself supporting 100 missionaries. I always wanted to be the role model for others, that I never had personally. The power of expectation and belief from someone that we respect and admire can unleash great amounts of power that have been held back. I also envision myself continuing to present health seminars around the country (USA).

EMC!: I hear the passion in your words, Dr. Stan. Most people who know you, and even those who are only remotely familiar with you and your work, describe you using the word “passionate.” Is passion something you work to manifest on a daily basis?

Dr. Stan Harris: Most definitely. One woman met me in the airport and said, “Whatever it is you do, I want to be part of because you exude such compassion, and power.” Like John Wesly of old, I just put myself on fire and people come watch me burn!

EMC!: Whose counsel have you benefited the most from?

Dr. Stan Harris: Other than the Bible, William E. Bailey who also mentored Jim Rohn, Les Brown and others.

EMC!: Your speaking presentations often include a dynamic demonstration of Martial Arts. Amazingly, you break 22 inches of bricks with your bare hands utilizing incredible speed and power. Can you describe the impact it has on your audiences?

Dr. Stan Harris: Because our generation is so visual. I like to use visual aids that they can relate to, to add extra impact to my message. People are often spell bound, and they really get the point that we can break through our limitations, no matter how hard, or difficult!

EMC!: That certainly paints a picture. Can you give us some examples which depict how people’s lives were changed for the greater after seeing you brick-breaking presentation?

Dr. Stan Harris: Here’s what Rita Graves from Texas said:

Why Martial Arts And Self Defense “Moves” Don’t Mean Jack Squat

Whenever people start learning martial arts and self defense skills — they will usually learn a lot of different “techniques”. Like kicking, punching, leg sweeping, etc.

However, just as important as technique — maybe even more important, depending on who you ask — is something you rarely hear in the dojos, on TV or read about in the magazines:

Attributes.

What are attributes?

They are things like awareness, line familiarization, sensitivity, strength, power, speed, distancing, timing, and body mechanics.

In other words, attributes are the things that make it possible to pull off a technique in a real life situation. The guy who trained me, Sifu Paul Vunak, explains it like this:


“Anyone can watch hours of Michael Jordan on videotape. Anyone can write down and study his techniques on dribbling, shooting, passing, and defense. Now why can’t that person go out and play like him? It is because one does not possess his attributes, like his awareness of teammates and defenders, his speed, distancing, and ability to coordinate his body.”

And this is where many traditional martial artists fall short. They may have very effective and efficient “moves”, but can’t execute them in a street-fighting situation.

Bottom line:

When it comes to techniques and attributes, without one, the other is useless. Train them both and you’ll be a lot more dangerous to a violent attacker than you would with just “moves.”

Is it a “Hurt” or is it an “Injury”

My father fed me this line every time I felt pain or discomfort. Growing up the coach’s son was not without difficulty. My dad never played favorites; in fact I had to do it better and cleaner than the other kids. Now, he didn’t say this to be malicious, he just wanted to teach me something about athletic competition and in turn, a bit about life.

No matter what contact sport you play, if you’re making contact, you’re gonna get banged up. As a competitive athlete, you get used to living with pain. Soreness, torn muscles, dislocated fingers, toes and broken bones are the norm. I am sure there are plenty of you who can predict the weather better than the Doppler. So what does working with pain teach us and how to we put it into your training. Now if your training for a specific competition you obviously want to be in the optimum shape for the time of your competition. If your injury is so debilitating, you can’t function safely in the realm of competition, then you don’t compete. When it comes to REAL self defense; we have a saying, “if you can leave your house, you better be ready to get the job done.”

Does this mean I wake up every day ready to take on the world? No. I probably wake up like most of you, slowly. But make no mistake, no matter what condition you leave your home in, you better be good to go. If not, stay home and don’t “compete”.

So, how do you teach your self to operate under less than optimum circumstances? How do you discover what your pain threshold is? How do you know the difference between a hurt and an injury? How you will function under the added stress? If you learn to practice hurt you will. If you can’t uses your right arm, use your left. Can’t stand, practice sitting. Can’t hit, arm yourself. If you are practicing for self defense realistically, this is the only attitude you can have. Anything less will leave you vulnerable.

If you have ANY physical conflict, you will get hurt. The notion of dispatching an enemy with hand to hand methods and not sustaining any injury is a lofty one, but it’s laughable at best. The more prolonged the conflict, the more damage you will absorb. One shot knock out, your hand is sore- knock down, drag out fight, he lays in the gutter, you drag yourself to the hospital.

This is one of the primary reasons I prefer to work out barefoot. Stubbed and dislocated toes hurt. This pain gets channeled into anger. The anger gets turned into adrenaline. The benefit is you associate pain with adrenalin. This is what will save your life!!! As soon as you feel pain you get mad and your convulsive reaction becomes an aggressive reaction. Your going to get hurt, you just have to deal with it.

Now if your practice doesn’t allow you to practice injured, you need to evaluate what you are trying to accomplish. I remember talking to a guy who practiced Brazilian jujutsu. He talked about what a great method of self defense it was and he expounded about the “realism”. Then he continued to tell me that he couldn’t practice because he was hurt. Now before I continue I must say that if the fault here is NOT Brazilian jujutsu; the problem is the guy practicing it. If he were realistic about his self defense he should get on the mat and learn to make his jujutsu work for him ESPECIALLY WHEN HE”S HURT. No matter what you practice, if you wish to adapt it for self defense, you better adapt it to every situation. It’s like a marriage- for better for worse, in sickness and in health. If you wrestle- you better know what its like to get hit or what it’s like to roll on the pavement. If you box, you’d better condition your hands to strike with out protection. With a little imagination, you can adapt anything for self defense.

This Popular Martial Arts Kick Can Get You Killed

People often send me emails asking me why I’m so hard on traditional martial arts — like karate, kung fu, aikido, etc.

Only problem is, I’m not hard on them.

In fact, I have nothing but respect for them — as did Bruce Lee and all the other street-fighting masters who have emerged in the past 30 years.

The street-fighting philosophy I teach literally has elements from some 30 different kinds of traditional martial arts. If I didn’t like or respect them, I wouldn’t be teaching them.

But at the same time…Bruce Lee had this saying: “absorb what is useful, reject what is useless, and add what is specifically your own.”

In other words, take a good look at what’s out there, extract what you can actually use in a street-fight — where there are no rules, regulations or referees — and leave all the fancy stuff out.

Like, for example, the much revered spinning high kick you see performed on TV and in the dojos all the time.

Totally useless in a real fight.

Don’t believe me?

Then go ahead and try it for yourself in a real fight.

Chances are you will either severely injure yourself, or leave yourself wide open to an attack.

Why?

Because unless you’re a phenomenal athlete, with an almost supernatural sense of balance, timing and power…and unless you perform your “super kick” at just the right angle and distance…you’ll fall flat on your face.

Happens all the time.

Reason why is because that particular kick — which is enormously popular in some of the traditional martial arts — was invented hundreds of years ago to kick people off their horses.

Not take out a thug in the back alley high on meth, with a knife in his hand.

You see, the violent criminals stalking our streets today are meaner, nastier and tougher than ever before in history. They have no sense of honor, fair play or morality whatsoever.

And to make matters worse, many of them also abuse mind-altering drugs and even steroids — making them almost immune to pain and pumped with an almost freakish kind of brute strength.

And so, to really defend yourself against these violent criminals you need fighting tactics that are “monkey simple” to learn, work almost automatically when you need them, and that can quickly do a lot of damage — whether you’re in shape, out of shape, or have any natural athletic ability whatsoever.

Bottom line:

When you’re in a violent altercation on the street, leave the fancy “Jackie Chan” moves and Van Dam roundhouse kicks for Hollywood where they belong.
